how to view my Milkdrop presets

Sun Aug 10, 2008, 5:04 AM
Hi, this should be a very quick guide to people who are new to Winamp and the Milkdrop music visualization plugin.

Milkdrop2.0 comes with the Winamp distribution since version 5.5 - [link] - be sure to have the visualizatin checkbox checked when installing winamp.

when winamp is installed, the primary visualization plugin is AVS, so first of all you have to select Milkdrop:

Then i recommend raising the maximum framerate, which is only 30fps by default:

when everything is configured, run milkdrop:

Milkdrop presets come as *.milk files which are to be placed in the presets folder under
/Winamp/Plugins/Milkdrop2/presets

by pressing [L] when winamp runs, you can browse and load presets from other folders too.
i also recommend to lock the active preset by pressing [Scroll] on your keyboard.

was this guide helpful? feel free to ask, if there are any doubts - i will improve this journal.

One last hint: if your PC is too old, some presets might not show up in the list - that means your video card doesn't support Pixelshader. But now select your music of choice and enjoy some addictive Visuals to it =p

Agh! This is too complicated for my lamebrain! :faint:
:icona-musing-discordian:
ehm.
at which point did you lose it?
would like to help, but i guess i need more information.
:iconjanetino:
i was trying to visualize each step before i took the step, which is nonproductive. but then i worry about my old video card, so i hesitate to even start the steps
:icona-musing-discordian:
can you name your graphics card - then i could tell you if it is capable of the new school stuff.
:iconjanetino:
i'm looking at the list of specs from the box (i tore the part out long ago) AGP video chipset? i see this
:icona-musing-discordian:
i see i could either describe how you can find out what chipset you use or you try milkdrop naively.

what do you think is the easier way? ;)
:iconjanetino:
tell me how to find out what i use, sounds more interestingly nonupsetting
:icona-musing-discordian:
press [Windows+R] then type in 'dxdiag' and enter. on the second tab you could easily find the name of your video adapter.
on the first tab there's also to see your processors id - that's also interesting.
(assuming you're running a windows pc)
